Doechii, also known as Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon, is a 26-year-old rapper, singer, and songwriter from Tampa, Florida. She sometimes goes by the alias “Swamp Princess” and is known for her bubbly, animated music that tells the story of her life as a party girl and an artist.
She won Best Rap Album for Alligator Bites Never Heal at the Grammys. Only three women have won the award since it was introduced in 1989. Lauryn Hill, Cardi B, and now Doechi.
Her speech was one of the most moving moments of the night. She spoke about her journey, saying, “I dedicated myself to sobriety, and God told me I would be rewarded. I know there are some Black girls out there, so many Black women watching, and I want to tell you, you can do it. Anything is possible.”
She also performed Catfish and Denial Is a River with acrobatic-level choreography. She executed backflips and was lifted into the air, delivering a high-energy performance that captivated the audience.
Doechii’s fashion was equally iconic. She is known for her chic and unique style, often wearing Miu Miu short shorts and suit jackets. On the red carpet, she wore an off-the-shoulder gray pinstripe dress with corseting down the back over a white Oxford shirt. Later, she changed into large bloomer pants when accepting her award, blending masculine elements of suiting with her signature feminine touch.
