Lately, I’ve had one song on repeat, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Nterini by Fatoumata Diawara is the perfect track to welcome the warmer weather. As soon as the sun starts shining, I roll down my windows, turn the volume up a few notches and let this song take over. One listen is never enough. I always find myself going back to play it again.
Fatoumata Diawara is a Malian singer songwriter currently based in France. Before launching her music career, she started out as an actress in theater and film. In Nterini, which translates to “My Love” or “Confidant,” she carries forward the tradition of Wassoulou “songs of advice,” singing primarily in Bambara, the national language of Mali.
The song’s groove is undeniable. It blends an upbeat rhythm with a light yet intricate guitar that weaves throughout the track, adding an effortless funk and jazz influence. Each section builds on the last, creating a really unique, but uplifting energy that keeps pulling you in. A standout moment is the guitar solo. It arrives right when the lyrics take a break, adding depth and texture to the song’s overall flow.
Diawara’s vocals are nothing short of incredible. She has a strikingly versatile voice, moving seamlessly between deep, resonant tones and soaring high notes, sometimes with a subtle yodel like effect that adds to the song’s uniqueness. It’s unexpected, but it fits perfectly within the track’s layered composition. The build up to the final chorus is the best part. It’s a moment of pure magic when all the elements come together so beautifully.
If you haven’t already, I highly recommend giving Nterini a listen. Whether you’re looking for something fresh to add to your playlist or a song to soundtrack your next drive with the windows down, this is it.
